Announcing 2025 Consumer Food Safety Education Conference, Registration Now Open

Bringing together nutrition, public health and food safety professionals to prevent food-related illnesses at the “fork” end in the chain of prevention.

The Partnership for Food Safety Education will host the Consumer Food Safety Education Conference (CFSEC) on March 13-14, 2025 at the Sysco Headquarters in Houston, Texas.

CFSEC is the only conference in the U.S. dedicated to consumer food safety education, convening research experts, nutrition professionals, and community-based health and food safety educators across the country who educate consumers on how to handle food safely at home.

The 2025 CFSEC will equip health and food safety educators from all sectors with knowledge and tools to prevent foodborne illness at the fork end of the chain of prevention as well as orient educators to national goals such as Healthy People 2030. Public health, nutrition and food safety educators need to be poised to reach consumers with food safety education that is effective at influencing behavior change. 

This conference will help advance knowledge in today’s critical health and food safety challenges. Conference attendees can expect sessions on food safety research, programming, and communications, alongside interactive food safety experiences.

This unique conference will be chaired by Charles Leftwich, vice president of food safety and quality assurance at Sysco Corporation and Tara Kelly, instructor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. 

CFSEC keynotes and speakers will be announced soon. Attendees will hear from top experts in the health and food safety industry who will provide the latest in food safety education research and practices and facilitate meaningful discussions around prevention of food-related illness among consumers. 

Other features of the CFSEC include:

  • The opportunity to network and collaborate with health and food safety educators from government agencies, nonprofit organizations, higher education and the food industry
  • Access to tools and resources that address the biggest food safety challenges
  • Posters exploring the latest research and innovations


Registration is now open!
Take advantage of the summer savings rate of $425 through Sept. 2 — a $75 savings off the standard rate or the early bird rate of $450 through Dec. 31 — a $50 savings off the standard rate!

PFSE is accepting abstract submissions on a variety of topics related to food safety, under these four program tracks:

  • Original Research
  • Food Safety Programs or Campaigns in Action
  • Interactive Presentations, Demos and Experiences
  • Food Safety Education Strategies and Successes (posters only)

Basem’s Story Solidified His Learning

One of the best ways to solidify the new strategies you learn is to apply them and teach them.

Basem Boutros is a CFSEC2017 scholarship student who explains how he applied his new learning from the conference to a story in his life and made his new learning permanent.

 Basem sent us his story:

The 2017 Consumer Food Safety Education Conference drew to my attention to several aspects that contribute to food safety behavior.  In this brief story, I see that I experienced a goal of food safety behavior change, self-regulation, without even realizing it!

Self-regulation refers to controlling oneself through self-monitoring.

In the past, I worked in a restaurant as prep cook/line cook and there were food safety standards in place that we all, as a back-of-the-house staff, were committed to.

Much of my job required the preparation and handling of raw chicken. One time, while I was preparing to put chicken wings in the mixing bowl to bread them, I checked the box and found that the wings were slimy and emitted an obnoxious smell.

I let the chef know and he recommended disposing of them. I felt like if it had not been for the pre-check I did, as a result of self-monitoring,  many people may have gotten sick!

That’s my learning story.

BAC Fighters “Wowed” by Consumer Food Safety Conference

Whether you attended in person, watched the live broadcast, or kept tabs on Twitter from work, BAC Fighters are reporting that CFSEC2107 is having a big effect on their work.

There was an excellent variety of sectors represented; BAC Fighters from academia, the corporate world, and government made up over 60% of attendees, with co-op extension, public health, and nonprofits making up nearly all of the rest. We would love to spread the word to more school teachers for the next conference!

Food Safety Superstar

What do you do when you have an encounter with a serious foodborne illness? You Fight BAC! ®

Dana Dziadul acquired Salmonella Poona after eating contaminated cantaloupe at the age of three.  She’s developed reactive arthritis as a result of the food poisoning. It affects her life every day.  Dana’s experience with a serious illness inspired her to become a food safety advocate – specifically to help keep children like her seven- year old sister safe from food poisoning.

Dana, now 17,  has released a book titled Food Safety Superstar that turns the four core practices into four core Superpowers every kid (and adult) needs to protect themselves against food poisoning. According to Dana, anyone can gain these superpowers with a little education.

Dana will join the Partnership for Food Safety Education and hundreds of health and food safety educators at the Consumer Food Safety Education Conference 2014. She will be featured in the plenary session, Champions for Consumers: Food Safety Educators in Action.
